Life doesn't always go according to plan.

Whether you're navigating a relationship breakdown, health challenge, career change, financial stress or simply a season where everything feels difficult, resilience isn't about pretending everything is okay.

It's about learning how to adapt, recover and continue moving forward, even when life feels uncertain.

The encouraging news is that resilience isn't something we're simply born with.

It's something we can strengthen over time.

Here are five practical ways to begin.

1. Focus on what you can control
When life feels uncertain, it's easy to spend enormous amounts of energy worrying about things outside our control.

Instead, ask yourself:
"What is one small thing I can influence today?"

Small actions create momentum.

2. Stay connected

Difficult times often make us withdraw from others.

While solitude has its place, genuine connection with trusted family members, friends or professionals can provide perspective, encouragement and hope.

You don't have to carry everything on your own.

3. Look after your physical wellbeing

Our minds and bodies are closely connected.

Simple habits such as regular movement, adequate sleep, nutritious food and time outdoors won't solve every problem, but they create a stronger foundation for coping with life's challenges.

Small improvements often make a meaningful difference.

4. Be kind to yourself

Many people speak to themselves in ways they would never speak to someone they care about.

Difficult seasons don't mean you've failed.

Treat yourself with the same patience, compassion and understanding you would offer a good friend.

Self-compassion isn't weakness.

It's an important part of resilience.

5. Remember that difficult seasons don't last forever
When we're struggling, it's easy to believe life will always feel this way.

Yet many of the people I've worked with over the years have discovered that the seasons they thought would define them eventually became the seasons that strengthened them.

Growth rarely happens without challenge.

Final thoughts

Resilience doesn't mean avoiding life's difficulties.

It means learning to navigate them with greater confidence, perspective and hope.

You don't need to have everything figured out today.

Sometimes resilience begins with simply taking the next small step.

And sometimes that next step is asking for support.
